Singapore and Malaysia currently describe the opening differently. Both official framings are below — no single confirmed opening day exists yet.

SINGAPORE'S LINE

“Targeted to commence passenger service at the end of 2026.”

LTA's project page (accessed Jul 2026) carries this wording. In Parliament on 5 May 2026, Law Minister Edwin Tong went further, stating the RTS Link is “targeted to commence service this December.”

MALAYSIA'S LINE

Construction complete by 31 Dec 2026; passenger operations from January 2027.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke set out this framing on 15 Jan 2026: finish construction by end-December 2026, begin operations in January 2027. An NST headline (8 May 2026) references a “Jan 1 launch”.

MICCI: RTS Link a game changer giving businesses cross-border certainty

Speaking at MICCI Southern Region's monthly get-together in Johor Baru, held in partnership with Astaka Padu Sdn Bhd, chairman Lee Ting Kiat called the RTS Link a game changer for Johor because it gives businesses certainty when planning cross-border travel, The Star reported on 20 July 2026. He said the link is expected to improve labour mobility, facilitate business collaboration and investment decisions across the Johor-Singapore corridor, and strengthen Johor Baru's property market, particularly city-centre developments near key transport links.

Tharman frames RTS + JS-SEZ as economic alignment; study sees RM3.3b annual JB spending boost

Concluding his state visit to Malaysia (12–15 Jul), President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the JS-SEZ and RTS Link will deepen economic complementarity — acknowledging some Singapore businesses will lose out while both countries win overall. A study by the Singapore Business Federation, Restaurant Association of Singapore and Singapore Retailers Association (Mastercard data plus ~2,100 survey respondents, Mar 2026) projects a 51% jump in Singapore consumer trips to JB and ~RM3.3b (S$1b) in added annual spending after the RTS opens.

Woodlands Gateway tender: 5.66ha RTS-linked transport hub, completion ~2030

JTC Corporation tender documents reported by The Straits Times on 13 Jul 2026 detail a 5.66-hectare mixed-use transport hub at Woodlands Gateway, connecting directly to the RTS Link station and Woodlands North MRT (Thomson-East Coast Line). The first phase includes a 6,500 sq m bus interchange, 28,000 sq m of retail space and 22,000 sq m of flexible offices, with the hub targeted for completion around 2030. The wider 35-hectare precinct is expected to anchor more than 25,000 jobs.

CNA (8 Jun) flagged unclear scope for Johor's RM10b elevated feeder — a trackless ART or an LRT-style system — stoking fears congestion will shift to JB streets when the RTS unloads 10,000 passengers per hour at Bukit Chagar. Wee Ka Siong demanded a RM10b federal allocation or a firm timeline (17–19 Jun); Loke said the PPP proposal is under UKAS evaluation (16 Jun); The Edge called the project “at a crossroads” (30 Jun).

Singapore Parliament passes Cross-Border Railways (Border Control Co-location) Bill

Edwin Tong's second-reading speech detailed the end-to-end co-located clearance process, designated-area rules, the Pier 47/48 incident-management protocol and concurrent criminal jurisdiction; the Bill passed the same day. Tong also stated publicly that the RTS Link is “targeted to commence service this December.”

RTSO ran multiple trainsets simultaneously at elevated speeds, validating systems including regenerative braking. Loke (3 Apr) said the global energy crisis has not hit progress or cost; the Fault-Free Run phase is expected from September 2026.

NST reported 90% completion with the final phase under way (3 Apr); Loke said RTSO's proposed fare would be presented to both governments (ST, 3 Apr) and confirmed Malaysia has asked Singapore to let the KTM Shuttle Tebrau continue past its contractual shutdown — no reply yet (Bernama, 3 Apr). Singapore tabled the Co-Location Bill on 7 Apr; MOT the same day said fares are RTSO's commercial call.

Commuter backlash over proposed fares

Daily commuters told The Star that RM15.50–21.70 is steep for a 5–6 minute ride — the Shuttle Tebrau today costs RM5/S$5 and some bus commuters pay ~RM450 a month. MCA president Wee Ka Siong proposed a RM300 monthly pass.

LTA announced RTSO Train 01's arrival at Woodlands North for a scheduled demonstration, saying it is “on track for the RTS Link to begin operations by end-2026”. Eight trains at launch, a shortest interval of 3.6 minutes, and 6am–midnight operating hours.
